Lady Lube and Dryness Relief (Psssst: Use Our Serum for Both)
Ever washed your face and then had it dry before you could put on moisturizer? Then you’ve felt that super tight, itchy feeling…not comfortable!
The same thing can happen to your skin down there. It can feel even worse because vaginal skin is more delicate and sensitive than the skin on your face.
Dry as the Desert
You might not hear your neighbor ladies shouting it from the rooftops, but most of us experience the discomfort, and sometimes pain, from vaginal dryness in our lifetimes. It can happen at any age for multiple reasons. It really rears it’s ugliness as we’re getting older and start to get into perimenopause and menopause.
We get it. Nobody wants to talk about how suddenly they’re not as wet as they used to be down there, but it’s actually a very common issue. In fact, 31% of all women will experience vaginal dryness in their lifetime (source: National Library of Medicine). It’s uncomfortable as all get out and can be painful, not only during sex but any time of the day or night.
We asked Dr. Brooke, our resident hormone and women’s health expert, and here’s what she had to say about vaginal dryness, particularly as we age. She describes it similar to, “an engine sputtering out, with pops and clicks of the engine going out, just as we have estrogen production going up and down.”
Estrogen is responsible for many things, one of them being maintaining vaginal lubrication and the health of the tissues around your reproductive organs. Dr. Brooke says, “Estrogen levels decline and the tissues that need that estrogen also start to decline. So without estrogen, those tissues become a little thinner. They’re not as plump as they used to be, and they’re not going to have as much gland secretion as they used to.”
Other causes of vaginal dryness include childbirth, breastfeeding, cancer treatment, removal of the ovaries, and taking certain medications like birth control, antidepressants, or even allergy and cold medicine.
Well, That’s Embarrassing
Unfortunately, a lot of us feel ashamed for not being able to produce our own moisture since it’s a strong sign we’re getting older (enough reminders already, thank you!).
While sleeplessness and hot flashes can be very disruptive, they’re nowhere nearly as intimate of an issue. The shame and anxiety around vaginal dryness is similar to how many men feel about erectile dysfunction.
And the worst of all, there wasn’t a dignified, elegant solution for it until Beloved.
Bring on the Great Lube
Even if you’re getting treated for vaginal dryness by your doctor, you oftentimes still need a quality, safe lubricant during sex to reduce friction. Ideally, one that won’t stain your 1,000 thread count sheets.
Dr. Brooke emphasizes that the quality of your lube matters, “You want to be careful of what you’re putting in your vaginal canal because it’s a sensitive area. The mucosal tissue isn’t as protected as our external skin. It is an internal tissue, so it doesn’t have the same layer of protection.” Having a lubricant that won’t throw off the balance of healthy bacteria that grows in the vaginal canal is essential too.
You want to avoid, like the plague, lubes and ingredients that aren’t safe. There are a lot of them out there, but how can you know? We create a guide for you. Click here to read it.
Get Rid of Daily Discomfort
What about those times when your private area feels so stupid and crazy uncomfortable, but it’s not sexy time? Those times when you could just wriggle out of your skin because it’s so damn unpleasant?
Our Intimacy Serum & Personal Moisturizer is perfect for those times, too. It’s a hormone-free way to get relief from vaginal dryness. Just a pump or two on your lady parts can do wonders providing a protective barrier that is soothing and eases the pain.
Think of it like skincare and moisturizer for your most sensitive skin. Use it just like you would your facial lotion, a couple of times a day to add moisture and comfort. Improved moisture lessens discomfort.
Just like with lube, be 100% sure to avoid common allergens and unsafe ingredients which would make the situation even worse.
Here’s the kicker: the key to moisturizing your lady parts is actually using a moisturizer. It can’t help if it’s left in the bottle unused. So create a little ritual to set yourself up for success.
Put a bottle on the back of your toilet or for easy application (our Serum is perfect for this because nobody else will know what it is!). Consider carrying a bottle in your purse if you’re a lady on-the-go. Then massage it into your vaginal skin, much like you would apply a moisturizer to your face, at least once a day.
Moisturizers require frequent and consistent use to work best. If you stop, the symptoms of dryness and discomfort will likely return. So! Create a routine for yourself so that you don’t have to suffer with that terrible uneasiness that comes with vaginal dryness.
The Bottom Line
As you age and estrogen drops, it becomes even more important to nurture those tissues to keep them healthy. “That’s why I love Beloved,” says Dr. Brooke, “it has anti-inflammatory ingredients, ingredients to boost connective tissue, so it’s not just about ‘let’s get it on’ but also protects the integrity of the tissue down there to maintain vaginal health to avoid running into issues down the road.”
